The NEED
In local Chinese middle schools, there is a lack of hands-on, prototyping oppurtunities for students interested in engineering. Communicating with the vice principle of Xuhui District Middle School on this topic, it was clear that this gap stems from lack of funding for the cost of materials in hands-on engineering prototypes — motors, computer access, 3D printers, etc
Not Just Shanghai
This gap doesn’t just exist in Shanghai. It is even more apparent in less-developed cities, where schools have access to fewer resources and fewer opportunities for hands-on engineering.
After finding success in Shanghai, I expanded the model to Chongqing as a test city to bring the initiative nationwide. In partnership with Chongqing Yucai Middle School, the Origami for Engineering club launched in Spring 2026, holding its first official session on March 2.
Since then, the club has grown into a school-wide initiative, attracting over 80 participants and introducing students to engineering through accessible, hands-on projects made primarily from paper.
